Should Everyone Double Cleanse?

Double cleansing became one of those skincare habits people started treating as universal. First an oil-based cleanser, then a water-based cleanser. Every evening, for everyone, no exceptions.

But like most skincare advice, the truth is more personal than that.

Double cleansing can be extremely useful. It can also be unnecessary for some skin types and routines. The question is not whether double cleansing is good or bad. The question is whether your skin actually needs it.

What double cleansing is meant to do

The first cleanse usually removes oil-based residue such as makeup, sunscreen, sebum and pollution buildup. The second cleanse removes water-based residue and leaves the skin feeling fresh.

For people who wear makeup, heavy SPF or spend long days in city environments, this can make a noticeable difference. The skin often feels cleaner without needing to scrub or use one very harsh cleanser.

A product such as Silk Melt fits naturally into that first step because it helps dissolve buildup while keeping the texture soft and comfortable.

Who benefits most?

Double cleansing can be especially useful if you wear foundation, long-wear makeup, water-resistant SPF or richer skincare during the day.

It can also help oily or congestion-prone skin when the issue is buildup rather than lack of cleansing.

In those cases, double cleansing may actually feel gentler than trying to remove everything with one strong foaming cleanser.

Who may not need it every night?

If you wear little or no makeup, use lightweight SPF and have dry or sensitive skin, double cleansing every evening may not always be necessary.

Some skin does better with one careful cleanse using a gentle formula such as Soft Reset. Other days, a lighter option like Quiet Water may be enough depending on what the skin has been exposed to.

The routine should respond to the day, not follow rules blindly.

Double cleansing should not feel stripping

If the skin feels tight after double cleansing, the routine may be too much or the textures may not be right.

Cleansing should leave the skin clear and comfortable, not depleted. This matters especially if the rest of your evening routine includes exfoliation, retinol or other active ingredients.

When too many intense steps come together, the skin barrier can become stressed quickly.

The takeaway

Not everyone needs to double cleanse every night.

It is a useful method when there is something to remove, especially makeup, SPF or heavier buildup. But skincare should always stay responsive. Some evenings need a full double cleanse. Others need something simpler.

The best cleanse is the one that leaves your skin clean, comfortable and ready for the rest of the routine.
